Frequently Asked Questions

Who are Drains First?

Frequently Asked Questions: West Yorkshire Drainage Experts

1. Who is responsible for a blocked drain: me or Yorkshire Water?

In West Yorkshire, responsibility depends on where the blockage is located:

  • Your Responsibility: Any pipes inside your property boundary that serve only your home. This includes sinks, toilets, and the section of pipe that leads to the shared sewer.
  • Yorkshire Water’s Responsibility: Shared sewers (drains that serve more than one property) and any pipes located outside your property boundary in the public highway.
  • Pro Tip: If your neighbors are also experiencing issues, the problem is likely in the public sewer.

2. How much does it cost to unblock a drain in Leeds or Bradford?

We believe in transparent, local pricing. While national franchises often have hidden "call-out" fees, we provide:

  • Fixed-Fee Unblocking: We offer competitive fixed rates for standard clearances, so you know the cost before we start.
  • No Call-Out Charge: You only pay for the work we do, even on weekends and bank holidays.

3. Why does my drain keep backing up?

Recurring blockages are usually a sign of a structural issue. Common causes in West Yorkshire include:

  • Tree Root Ingress: Roots from mature trees in areas like Harrogate and North Leeds can penetrate pipe joints.
  • Ground Movement: Historic mining areas in Wakefield can cause pipes to shift or collapse.
  • The Solution: We recommend an HD CCTV Survey to identify the exact cause so we can provide a permanent "No-Dig" repair.

4. What is a "Home Buyer Drain Survey" and do I need one?

If you are purchasing a property in Leeds, Bradford, or Harrogate, a standard home survey may not cover the underground pipes.

  • Why get one: It identifies hidden collapses, root damage, or fat build-up before you sign the contract.
  • The Benefit: If we find a fault, you can use our technical report to negotiate the repair cost off the house price.

5. Can you repair a drain without digging up my driveway?

Yes. We specialize in No-Dig Trenchless Technology (Structural Patch Lining). This involves inserting a resin-impregnated sleeve into the damaged pipe, which hardens to create a "pipe-within-a-pipe." It is faster, cleaner, and more affordable than traditional excavation.

Our History: Serving West Yorkshire’s Infrastructure

Our expertise is built on an understanding of West Yorkshire’s unique geographical and industrial evolution.

Victorian Engineering & Industrial Roots

Leeds and Bradford were at the heart of the Industrial Revolution. Much of the drainage infrastructure in central districts—like our base in LS12 Upper Wortley—still relies on Victorian brick-built sewers. These systems were engineering marvels of their time but now require specialist care to maintain without damaging the aging masonry.

Adapting to Modern Challenges

As the region expanded, particularly following the Land Drainage Act of 1930, the network became more complex. We have evolved alongside these changes, transitioning from traditional rodding methods to the high-tech Hydro-Jetting and Robotic CCTV systems we use today.

A Local Family Tradition

Unlike national corporations, we are a family-led business with years of local experience. We’ve spent decades navigating the specific "hillside" drainage issues of Bradford and the high-water tables of the Wharfe Valley. Today, we combine that historical local knowledge with state-of-the-art technology to keep West Yorkshire flowing.
